How to play Uno

  1. Deal 7 cards to each player. Put the rest face down as the draw pile and turn the top card over to start the discard pile.
  2. Match the top card. On your turn, play a card that matches the discard pile by colour, number or symbol. You can also play a Wild card.
  3. Can't play? Draw one. If you have nothing to play, draw a card. If that card can be played, you may play it straight away.
  4. Say "Uno". When you are down to one card, say "Uno". If someone catches you before the next player starts, you draw 2 cards.
  5. Go out to win the round. The first player with no cards left wins the round and scores points from everyone else's hands.

What the action cards do

CardWhat it does
SkipThe next player misses their turn.
ReversePlay changes direction. With 2 players it works like a Skip.
Draw TwoThe next player draws 2 cards and misses their turn.
WildPlay it on anything and choose the next colour.
Wild Draw FourChoose the colour, and the next player draws 4 and misses their turn. Officially you can only play it when you have no card of the current colour.

How Uno scoring works

The round winner adds up the cards left in every other player's hand and scores that total. The first player to reach 500 points wins the game.

Card left in a handPoints
Number cards (0 to 9)Face value
Skip, Reverse, Draw Two20 each
Wild, Wild Draw Four50 each

Example round

Asha goes out. Ravi is holding a 7, a Skip and a Wild: 7 + 20 + 50 = 77. Meera is holding a 3 and a 9: 12. Asha scores 89 for the round. Everyone else scores 0.

Many families play the simpler way: everyone counts their own leftover cards, and the lowest total wins. 1-0 handles both. Pick "Highest total wins" for official scoring, or "Lowest total wins" for the family version.
